HOTEL LE MERIDIEN

The Land of Java in the Center of Jakarta.

This oil on canvas painting is the work of an artist named Men Sagan. In his paintings, Men Sagan follows the teachings of Affandi, the world-famous Indonesian painter. Thus, it comes to no surprise if someone were to mistake Men Sagan's painting as Affandi's when seen in passing. This painting, straightforwardly titled Hotel Le Meridien, was made just before the hotel's inauguration in the '90s.

Tracing through Men Sagan's process of creating arts, he frequently paints while being 'face-to-face' with his object of painting, which is done to build an intimacy with it. He also did this when working on this particular painting of Le Meridien Jakarta. The finished work that now adorns the wall of the hotel is not here merely as decoration. It is also a staple icon of Le Meridien Jakarta's history.
