The Weeping Fig

Men Sagan is an Indonesian artist that is renowned both nationally and internationally, having done exhibitions at home and abroad. He is known to inherit the style of his mentor, Affandi. The man, who hailed from Sagan, Yogyakarta, takes it even further by also following Affandi's footsteps in choosing the objects of his paintings. Both the mentor and the student have painted things like boats, the sun, and a cockfight. This artwork titled "The Weeping Fig" by Men Sagan truly exhibits the artist's capability in emulating the style of Affandi.

The weeping fig, especially in Asian countries like Indonesia, not only benefits the environment but also carries with it a philosophical value. When planted in hilly areas, the tree is capable of preventing landslides by holding rainwater that would otherwise erode the earth.

Other than that, locals believe that some parts of the tree have the ability to cure illnesses, like high fever, dysentery, and others. In some parts of Indonesia, the weeping fig is treated as something that attracts the spirits and therefore should not be disturbed. In Bali, the tree is even considered to be holy according to local beliefs.
